I love Doctor Who.
I enjoy the relaunch of the show from BBC.
I started to watch some of the original series and it occurred to me that
it reflects the fears of The Cold War.
Science Fiction got big in the post-World War II era and during The Cold War. Once
atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima, atomic science, rocket science and
science fiction skyrocketed. Before that, a bomb that destroyed a whole city was unimaginable. Then in August 1949, the USSR joined the Atomic Age with their first Atomic Weapon.
This is why science fiction was so popular during the Cold War – after the Atomic
Age began, people started thinking more about what else could be
out there. Could there be other weapons as powerful as this nuclear weapon?
It made everyone scared, especially while they knew the Soviets were
building new weapons.
The original Doctor Who reflected the fears of The Cold War.
Mutually Assured Destruction is what the Americans and Soviets had
during the Cold War. That links into Doctor Who because the Time Lords and
Daleks killed each other off. They were so evenly matched, they
fought and fought until the Doctor had to ensure that they were all
dead. The Doctor was the last surviving Time Lord because he killed
the remaining Time Lords and Daleks to end the The Last Great Time
War. BBC took advantage of people’s fears during the Cold War; fears of
what the USSR might be developing. They made an extraterrestrial
version of the Cold War in order to deal with it. It was a science fiction
show named Doctor Who. BBC was very clear in their reports on
developing a science fiction show that they wanted it to be distinctly British.
They wanted it to be more like a novel than short stories,
which were more popular in America. So Doctor Who was developed and gave
the British people hope that there was a “Future for Great Britain!”
